Bicycle Accident Statistics 2007
In 2007, there were 3,888 traffic accidents involving bicycles in Illinois. That includes 17 fatal bicycle crashes, killing 18 people. An additional 3,836 crashes resulted in injuries. Cyclists represented 3.7 percent of the total number of traffic accident injuries in 2007.
Most of the crashes involving bicycles in 2007 -- 77 percent -- occurred in daylight conditions. The second highest percentage of crashes occurred at night in areas where the road was lighted.
Urban areas experienced the vast majority of bicycle-related crashes; 3,745 crashes occurred in urban areas in 2007, compared to 143 in rural areas. City streets and roads were the site of the highest numbers of bicycle crashes.
Most injured bicyclists were under the age of 55, with the 10-14 year-old group experiencing the highest number of injuries. Fatalities, however, were most common among middle-aged adults.
Of the 18 bicyclists killed in crashes in 2007, 16 were tested for alcohol. Of those 16, 13 fatally injured bicyclists tested negative for alcohol.
