Illinois Pedestrian Traffic Accident Statistics 2007
In 2007, there were 165 fatal pedestrian crashes in Illinois, killing 172 people. An additional 6,020 crashes involved injuries. Pedestrians represented 6 percent of the total number of traffic accident injuries in 2007.
- Sixty-two percent of the 6,191 crashes which involved pedestrians in 2007 occurred in daylight conditions. The second highest percentage of crashes occurred at night in an area where the road was lighted.
- Urban areas experience the vast majority of pedestrian crashes; 6,008 crashes occurred in urban areas in 2007, compared to 183 in rural areas. City streets and roads were the site of the highest numbers of pedestrian crashes.
- Injured pedestrians were spread fairly evenly across the age groups, except for lower numbers of injured persons among the very young and old. Fatalities, however, were more common among older age groups.
- Of the 172 pedestrians killed in crashes in 2007, 134 were tested for alcohol. Of those 134, 65 fatally injured pedestrians had a BAC of 0.01 or higher.
