Illinois Road Construction Accident Statistics
- There were 7,729 vehicle crashes in the vicinity of road construction zones in 2007, resulting in 2,007 injuries. There were 18 fatal crashes in work zones, in which 21 people were killed. Two of the persons killed were roadway construction workers. Crashes in work zones accounted for 1.8 percent of all traffic crashes in 2007.
- Most work zone crashes, 3,636, occurred on urban Interstate-type roads. Work zone crashes on city streets and urban state routes were also common. Work zone crashes on urban roads, especially urban Interstates, also accounted for the greatest numbers of persons injured. In total, there were 7,261 work zone crashes in urban areas in 2007, versus 468 work zone crashes in rural areas.
- Fatal work zone crashes in 2007 killed 10 vehicle drivers, 5 passengers, 4 pedestrians, and 2 roadway construction workers. Fifteen of the 21 fatal crashes occurred on urban roads, including 8 crashes on urban Interstates.
- The largest percentage of fatal work zone crashes, 39 percent, occurred over the 4 hours between 12:00 and 3:59 a.m. in 2007. Fatal work zone crashes were least common between 8:00 p.m. and 11:59 p.m.
