Infant Dies of ‘Gross Negligence Resulting in Sodium Overdose’ at Local Hospital

Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit
CHICAGO, IL – A wrongful death lawsuit was filed on April 5, 2011 in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois by Patrick A. Salvi of the law firm of Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P.C., on behalf of a Chicago family who suffered the loss of their infant son at only 40-days of life due to an excessive sodium dose which caused his fatal injuries.
On September 6, 2010 baby boy Genesis Burkett was born at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, to parents Fritzie and Cameron Burkett of Chicago. Although born premature, Genesis was doing extremely well, and was improving every day. His progress abruptly ended, however, when he was given an IV bag on October 15, 2010 that contained a fatal dose of sodium chloride – approximately 60 times the dose of sodium ordered by the physician. Genesis went into cardiac arrest and died due to the miscalculated IV solution. The hospital has since admitted multiple mistakes were made.
“Genesis Burkett should be a happy and healthy 6-month-old boy at home with his family today. The innocent infant died of malpractice, plain and simple, and we intend on proving it in court,” said lead Plaintiff’s attorney Patrick Salvi. My office is firmly committed to obtaining substantial compensation for Fritzie and Cameron Burkett for the loss of their beautiful son and to do everything possible to make sure something like this never happens again.”
