Motorcycle Crashes

While motorcycle crashes accounted for only 1 percent of all crashes in the year 2006, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) the number of motorcyclists killed accounted for an astonishing 10 percent of all roadway fatalities.

Several factors play a role in injuries to motorcycle operators and passengers. First, the design of most cycles does not provide any physical protection to the passengers. Operators and passengers can easily be flung through the air or crushed during an accident. Second is the small size of the vehicle. Many operators of larger passenger cars and trucks do not pay enough attention to motorcycles while driving, which can lead to severe accidents. Third, a study performed by the IDOT found that only 37.5 percent of riders wear helmets. Helmets have been proven effective in helping to save lives because they protect the head, brain and neck during an accident. Statistically, of the 132 people killed in motorcycle crashes in 2006, 50 would have survived if had they been wearing a helmet.
