What Is Sepsis?

Sepsis is your body's extreme reaction to an infection. Instead of fighting the infection, your immune system attacks your own organs.

Common triggers: pneumonia, UTIs, and skin infections

STAGE 1: SEPSIS

The body's inflammatory response kicks in.

Catching it early saves lives.

Early Warning Signs

– Fever or low body temperature – Chills, clammy skin – Rapid heart rate & breathing – Confusion or disorientation – Dizziness

Seek care immediately after any infection or surgery.

STAGE 2: SEVERE SEPSIS

Organs begin to fail.

This is a medical emergency.

Signs Organs Are Failing:

– Severe confusion or lethargy – Reduced urine output – Difficulty breathing – Low blood pressure – Skin mottling or discoloration – Severe abdominal pain

Requires ICU-level care

STAGE 3: SEPTIC SHOCK

This is life-threatening. High mortality rate.

Every minute matters.

Critical Warning Signs

– Dangerously low blood pressure – Weak, rapid pulse – Ventilator may be needed – Little to no urine output – Cold extremities, pale/mottled skin – Loss of consciousness

Who's at Higher Risk?

- Infants & older adults - Weakened immune systems - Recent surgery or catheters - Chronic illness

Did Medical Negligence Cause Sepsis?

Delayed diagnosis or improper treatment of sepsis may be medical malpractice.
