The Chicago Riverwalk is located on the south bank of the downtown Chicago River. It extends from Lake Shore Drive to Lake Michigan and Lake Street and is located near the Bicentennial Riverfront Park in Chicago. The Chicago Riverwalk is an award-winning and pedestrian-friendly space that is equally alive at night as it is during the bustling day. The Riverwalk in Chicago was built in phases and includes four districts:

  • The Confluence 
  • The Civic
  • The Esplanade
  • The Arcade

The multi-use public space consists of bars, cafes, restaurants, a Vietnam War memorial, and small parks. 

How Long Is the Chicago Riverwalk and How Deep?

The Chicago Riverwalk is 1.25 miles, making it a perfect place to walk. It is 21 feet at its deepest point and 800 feet at its widest.

Is Chicago Riverwalk Free?

You can enjoy the Riverwalk in Chicago for free, but there are also plenty of fun things you can do for a premium, such as:

The Riverwalk consists of six coves:

  • The marina
  • The cove
  • The River Theater
  • The Water Plaza
  • The Jetty
  • The Boardwalk

2. There Is a Museum on the Riverfront

The McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum is located right on the Riverwalk. You can learn about the famous movable bridges and enjoy panoramic views of the city here.

3. It Includes an Outdoor Art Gallery

Public art is on display at the Riverwalk, including murals, banners, and sculptures. Art on the MART features video-projected art installations, the largest of its kind in the world.

4. It Used to Be a Shipping Channel

Before all of the picturesque additions to Chicago’s Riverwalk, the site used to be a humble shipping channel. Major work was completed to make it what it is today.

5. You Can Learn About the Environment on the Riverwalk

Get an ecology lesson by visiting The Jetty. You’ll learn about the river’s system of canals and the impact of engineering. You can also fish and bird-watch at the Riverwalk.
