The John Hancock Center stands 1,500 feet when measured to the top of its antenna masts. It is a mixed-use building that includes retail and office space, dining, lounging, a parking garage, 700 condominiums, and residential apartments. It includes a restaurant on the 95th floor where diners can look out at the city and Lake Michigan. Its observatory has a 360° view of the city, four states, and a view that expands 80 miles. 

History of the John Hancock Center

John Hancock Center was developed by the architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, which also built the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), Chicago’s tallest building. It was named for John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company, a developer and an original building tenant. The tenant was named after the U.S. founding father John Hancock. At the time the building was built, it was the tallest residential building in the world.

Here are some things you might not know about the John Hancock Center include:

  • The building’s elevators are some of the fastest in the world, getting people from the ground floor to the 95th in just 40 seconds.
  • Each X-shaped cross brace at the building is 18-stories tall.
  • The building is so tall that the temperature at the top is six degrees cooler than the air at the bottom.
  • At the top of the building is a time capsule that contains a piece of the Eiffel Tower.
  • Residents can do much of their living without ever leaving the building. The building has its own election precinct, post office, private supermarket, and telephone network.
