History of the Shedd Aquarium

The Shedd Aquarium was opened on May 30, 1930. It was a gift to the city of Chicago from retail leader John G. Shedd, a protégé of Marshall Field, a benefactor of the nearby Field Museum. Mr. Shedd never saw the aquarium during his lifetime, having passed away after only seeing the architect’s first drawings of Shedd Aquarium. However, his widow, Mary Shedd, cut the ribbon at Shedd Aquarium’s official opening ceremony.
