History of Lambs Farm

Terese and Corinne Owen, teachers who taught at a local school for adults with developmental disabilities, began their mission by opening a small pet shop on Chicago’s State Street. What made the shop different was that all of its 12 employees had developmental disabilities. The Owens firmly believed that these disabilities should not inhibit their workers’ ability to live a productive and fulfilling life. That small store served as the impetus for a broader goal of helping adults with developmental disabilities thrive.

A few years later, the Owens were able to acquire a farm with the help of local support from philanthropist W. Clement Stone as the community began seeing the Owens’ mission as a model program. The Owens and their dedicated team of family members, employees, and donors transformed an old barn into one of the largest pet stores in the area. They also created new businesses to provide more employment opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities.
