The Conserve Plus Total hip Resurfacing System, manufactured by Wright Medical Technology, is a hip resurfacing device. The device gained FDA approval in 2009 as one of a number of metal-on-metal hip replacements that have entered the market. The device manufacturer claims it has a wide range of motion for users. But there are side effects.
The British Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) published a report about metal-on-metal hip replacements and soft tissue. What the agency found was not pretty. The MHRA reported that many patients have reported hip pain after receiving these hip replacements and potentially severe soft tissue reactions.
Because the FDA allows medical devices to be approved without testing if they are similar to other devices that have been tested, the Conserve Plus was put on the market without any testing. The study also found significant side effects which could cause adverse health effects.
These side effects could require the recipient of these hip replacements to undergo surgery to have them removed or replaced. Also, other research suggests that metal-on-metal hip replacement recipients might be at a higher risk for kidney or bladder cancer, The Telegraph reports.
These concerns are because of the possibility that small pieces of metal might break off into the soft tissue (called metallosis) and cause inflammation or infection. These can also get into the bloodstream and poison major organs, leading to the risk of cancer to kidneys or the bladder.
The Telegraph reported that out of 72 people involved in a study, 17 were found to have genetic damage done to their bladder by these devices.
Obviously, this causes concern. While it is true that some recipients of metal-on-metal hip replacements such as the Conserve Plus have no problems, the risk is still there. As such, the lawsuits against the Conserve Plus have been consolidated in federal court. If you think you might have a case, do not hesitate to call us.
