CHICAGO (June 18, 2025) – The family of an 11-year-old Northwest Indiana girl who died from morphine toxicity after being treated at a suburban cancer center was awarded $20.5 million by a Cook County jury Tuesday.
Ava Wilson, who was in remission from b-lymphoblastic leukemia, went for a follow-up appointment at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn in October 2020. Her outlook was positive and she had no detectable leukemia in her blood at the time of the appointment. About 36 hours later, she died in her sleep at home from acute drug toxicity from several substances, including lethal levels of morphine, hydroxyzine and gabapentin.
