OSWEGO, Ill. (August 1, 2025) – A 2-year-old boy died and 13 people were injured after a car crashed into a Portillo’s restaurant in Oswego, Illinois, on Wednesday afternoon.

The gold-colored sedan reportedly crashed through the front doors near the parking lot and remained surrounded by shattered glass, debris, and crushed tables and chairs, reported NBC 5.

Fourteen people were injured in the crash; eight of them were taken to the hospital, and six were treated at the scene, according to CBS News. Of those taken to the hospital, one died and three others had serious injuries, Chicago Tribune reported.

The 2-year-old boy was inside the restaurant when the collision occurred and later died at the hospital from his injuries. All other people harmed in the incident were inside the restaurant as well.

The driver was a 50-year-old woman and among those being treated at the hospital, according to Oswego Police Chief Jason Bastin.

Police said the driver was alone in the car and talking before she was taken to the hospital, but didn’t elaborate on what she said or what may have caused the collision. Authorities are reviewing surveillance video and other evidence.
