Chicago father-to-be dies in crash after suspect flees with $700K of Louis Vuitton goods

CHICAGO (September 18, 2025) – An expectant father was hit and killed by a suspect who was fleeing a smash-and-grab robbery on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. The incident occurred around 4:53 a.m. last Thursday morning, mentioned ABC 7.

Mark Arceta, 40, worked at a local hospital and was heading in for his final shift before paternity leave when he was killed, FOX 32 reports.

He now leaves behind a baby boy, who was born just one day after his death. The Arceta family says Mark was looking forward to welcoming his second child into the world.

The Chicago Police Department says the suspect, 30-year-old Dejuan Wingard, was driving nearly 80 mph at the time of the crash. He had been arrested 12 times as an adult in Chicago, according to CPD records.

Investigators say the suspect was part of a “theft crew” that broke into a Louis Vuitton store on Michigan Avenue. The crime was caught on camera as one suspect was seen driving a truck through the store windows. The suspects then went inside and stole nearly $700,000 in merchandise, according to court records. The thieves then got into several vehicles and speed off, police said.

At least seven people are now charged in connection to the incident. All of which have long rap sheets, according to court documents.

Four of the seven alleged robbers appeared in court last week while the other three remained hospitalized, reported Law&Crime.
