CHICAGO (July 6, 2026) – Hit-and-run crashes have reached epidemic proportions in Chicago.
Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard Partner, and former Cook County prosecutor, Lance Northcutt, says nearly half of all pedestrian fatalities in Chicago are hit-and-run crashes. In cases involving death or great bodily harm, there is a clearance rate that’s just above 9%, which is less than a third of what other cities, like New York, typically have. Mr. Northcutt told ABC 7’s Sarah Schulte, the low clearance rate is likely due to a lack of resources within the Chicago Police Department.
