Cook County jury awards $10.5 million to husband of kindergarten teacher struck, killed by dump truck

CHICAGO (October 1, 2026) – A $10.5 million jury verdict obtained by Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard attorneys Lance D. Northcutt, Jennifer L. Ashley, and Emily T. Art has been recognized as the 78th Highest Wrongful Death Verdict in the United States in 2025 by Top Verdict, an ALM publication. The list recognizes significant verdicts obtained in cases tried before state or federal juries across the United States.

On September 29, 2022, 45-year-old Kindergarten teacher Sylwia Jarosz was riding her bicycle to work in Arlington Heights when a dump truck collided with another vehicle and veered into the intersection, striking Sylwia. She suffered catastrophic injuries and later died at the hospital.

Sylwia’s husband, Krzysztof, filed a wrongful death lawsuit following the loss of his wife through his attorneys at Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard. The defendants admitted liability before trial and a damages-only trial in the case began on March 11, 2025 before the Honorable John P. Kirby. Following a 3-day trial, the jury awarded Krzysztof Jarosz $10.5 million for his loss of society, grief, sorrow, and mental suffering, as well as the loss of his wife’s spousal benefits and services.
