Brian Salvi:
The delay in diagnosing or the misdiagnosis of meningitis can have catastrophic consequences. Like most failure to diagnose infection cases, there can always be ongoing complications that need to be addressed immediately. But as it relates to meningitis, it's particularly scary because this is a typically viral infection that ultimately attacks the brain, brain stem, and spinal cord. The inflammation that it causes in and around those areas can lead to permanent catastrophic damage that can fully debilitate a person for the rest of their life, if not kill them. And so meningitis in and of itself is a very dangerous infection and requires prompt medical attention whenever it is diagnosed.
