History of the Navy Pier

Navy Pier was conceptualized by Daniel Burnham, one of the most recognized architects of the 20th century. He helped create the first urban plan in which he envisioned public piers that transformed the lakefront of Chicago into attractive civic space that would foster a sense of community. At an initial price tag of $5 million, the 292-foot-wide Navy Pier finished construction in 1916. It was the largest pier in the world, projecting more than 3,000 feet into Lake Michigan. It is still the longest public pier in the world today.

The pier had a major presence on the lakefront, enjoying both commercial and cultural success. It became the epicenter of the city, providing art exhibits, concerts, plays, and many other activities for millions of visitors each year.
