I'm drawn to situations where there is a power imbalance, standing up for people who don't really have an ability to do that for themselves. What motivates me first and foremost is knowing that my client is relying on me to fight the fight that they cannot fight for themselves. To foster open communication and trust with a client, it starts with the lawyer. So I try to be in any conversation, professional or otherwise, as authentic as I can be. If the person you're speaking with can tell that you're not putting on a front, you're not trying to convince them of anything, you're not trying to impress them or give them the good answer even if it's not the truthful answer, then I think that's what trust is built on.

The most important thing when interacting with clients is to be a listener and also a counselor. I think keeping an open mind is important. Being human is important. Maintaining curiosity when something isn't adding up, or it seems like there might be more to the story. Maintaining that curiosity, I think, throughout your case can lead you to uncover nuggets of information or, or routes that you can take that end up being really important, but may not have been immediately apparent in the beginning.

The most fulfilling part about being a lawyer is overcoming the challenge of developing a cohesive story and piecing it together bit by bit until you can present it in a way that is totally fluid and really captures not just the facts of what happened, but also the heart of the story. My name is Kristen Stoicescu, and I'm an attorney at Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard.
