History of First National Bank of Waukegan
The First National Bank of Waukegan, or the Waukegan Building as it is commonly known, was built in 1925 at 1 S. Genesee.
Charles R. Steele and Ransom Steele, who owned the banking firm CR&R Steele, Bankers, opened the first bank between Kenosha and Chicago. The Steeles were some of the earliest applicants for a national bank charter after the National Banking Act of 1864 was passed. They erected a bank building on 1 S. Genesee.
Once the Steeles received their charter, they began operations as First National Bank of Waukegan. In 1925, a new bank building was constructed at 1 S Genesee. It was designed by the St. Louis Bank Equipment Company and built by the Chicago contractor Hoggson Brothers. The Neoclassical two-story building features Chicago Style influenced massing, a cornice that displays the year the bank was established, fluted pilasters on the façade. The interior is a symbol of luxury with marble floors and brass chandeliers.
Renovations have been completed over the years to make the bank more modern and energy-efficient. Some of the original furnishings were donated to historic societies.

The First National Bank of Waukegan was the first bank in Lake County, Illinois. It is recognized throughout the community and admired for its Classical Revival architecture. It has earned its spot in the National Register of Historic Places. It is historically significant because it has always functioned as a bank building, even though it has changed ownership over the years. It was landmarked on June 18, 2007.
