What Is the History of Waukegan Harbor Lighthouse?

Waukegan became a bustling port in the 1800s due to its proximity to Chicago and Milwaukee. Little Fort or Waukegan Harbor Lighthouse.  This was the third light to serve the port and was built in 1889, replacing a light built in 1849. The former lighthouse featured a brick tower, while the current design is a conical steel white tower, 21’ in diameter, along with a one and one-half story keeper’s dwelling. A two-story fog signal building was added in 1905. A fire destroyed the fog signal building and the lantern room of the attached tower in 1967. The light tower was capped and topped by an exposed beacon. The upper portion of the tower is painted green, and the house displays a green light. The keeper’s dwelling is now located on the corner of Madison St. and Harbor Pl. and has served as a bait and tackle shop.
