Waukegan Municipal Beach Overview

The Waukegan Municipal Beach is located at 201 Sea Horse Drive in Waukegan, IL. It is located on Lake Michigan and stretches about one mile long. Waukegan Municipal Beach is free to residents of Waukegan. Otherwise, there is a $20 fee per vehicle. The beach is much less crowded and harder to find than other beaches in the area, so it’s a perfect spot for a quaint family afternoon or solo trip. There are several piers and a small lighthouse at the beach, making it a picturesque locale. Just a few minutes away are nearby restaurants, bars, and shopping areas.

Things to Do at the Beach

Here are some things you might not know about Waukegan Municipal Beach include:

• Play volleyball – The small beach boasts three sand volleyball courts. Sand soccer is also a favorite pastime at the beach.
• Picnic – There are tons of picnic tables and grassy areas at the beach where you can enjoy a refreshing snack or meal.
• Participate in water sports – The 1,000-slip marina at Waukegan Municipal Beach is the perfect place to enjoy competitive boat racing, sailing, jet skiing, kite-boarding, or just swimming or sunbathing. 
• Fish – There are piers for fishing and a fish cleaning station at the beach.
• Bird watch – Waukegan City has a partnership with Lake County Audubon Society to advance bird conservation known as Sharing Our Shore-Waukegan, which has received national acclaim. The Lake County Audubon Society has also established a self-guided walk to promote public environmental awareness. 
• Listen to music – The Stiner Pavilion at Waukegan Municipal Beach features the Waukegan Band Foundation on Tuesday nights, as well as many other summer concerts and festivals. 
• Eat – The Dockside era has various food items for sale and dockside dining. You can also spot some food trucks beachside. The beach also has permanent barbeque grills and picnic tables. 

The marina is also a prime location for boat rides, year-round boat storage, and access to the Yacht Club. There are also sailing lessons and boat races.

Beach Hours

The Waukegan Municipal Beach is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily from one week before Memorial Day to one week after Labor Day.
